In March, the University of Alaska announced it’s negotiating the sale of timber on about 13,400 acres of its land in the Haines Borough. The ten year, negotiated sale, is estimated to generate 150 million board feet and $10-$15 million. KHNS Senior Reporter Abbey Collins spoke with University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen, Director of Land Management Christine Klein, and a panel of local residents about the sale. Local residents included representatives from the local timber industry, Scott Rossman and Sylvia Heinz, as well as habitat biologist Ben Kirkpatrick, the Chilkat Indian Village’s Tony Strong, and Haines Borough Manager Debra Schnabel.
