KHNS News Mission Statement:
KHNS reporters seek to create a more informed public in Haines, Skagway and Klukwan — one challenged and invigorated by a deeper understanding and appreciation of events, ideas, and cultures.
Corrections Policy:
In correcting inaccuracies, KHNS names the error, includes a note on the story. Fixing mistakes is a critical step to establishing a robust culture of accuracy. To report an error, please email khnsnews@gmail.com
Editorial Independence policy:
The primary obligation of ethical journalism is to serve the public. KHNS News will avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, to avoid the risk of compromising our credibility. We are vigilant in disclosing to both our supervisors and the public any circumstances where our loyalties may be divided and when necessary, we recuse ourselves from related coverage. We deny favored treatment to advertisers, donors or any other special interests, and resist internal and external pressure to influence coverage. Decisions about what we cover and how we do our work are made by our reporters, not by those who provide KHNS with financial support.
Donor Transparency policy:
KHNS is committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.
Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics and special projects including the Rasmussen Foundation. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that operates as a public trust, we do not pay certain taxes. We may receive funds from standard government programs offered to nonprofits or similar businesses including the Skagway and Haines boroughs and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
We make public all revenue sources and donors who give $5,000 or more per year. As a news nonprofit, we avoid accepting charitable donations from anonymous sources, political parties, elected officials or candidates seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
Our news judgments are made independently – not based on or influenced by donors or any revenue source. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review or edit content.
