What to expect on the Haines municipal election ballot

Six candidates are vying for three open seats on the Haines Assembly in the Oct. 3 municipal election. There are two three-year terms and one one-year term up for grabs. Michael Fullerton, Andrew Gray, Brenda Josephson, Diana Lapham, Sean Maidy and Stephanie Scott have put their names in the running. The Haines mayor’s race is also contested. Incumbent Jan Hill is being challenged by political newcomer Joanie Wagner. Also on the ballot are four school board seats. But, only three candidates have put their names into the running. Another early closure for Chilkat Valley moose hunt

The Haines-area moose hunt is closing early for the third year in a row. Twenty-five moose have been harvested in the Chilkat Valley. That’s the management limit set by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. The emergency order closes the hunt in Unit 1D at 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Since Sept. 15, hunters have harvested one spike-fork, four 50-plus inch and 17 three-brow tine bulls. Three sublegal moose were taken. The low number of spike or forked animals also factored into the decision to close the hunt early....

Haines stakeholders consider design, funding for Lutak Dock

Haines’ Lutak Dock is an essential port for freight and fuel entering the community. But, it’s in bad shape and needs to be repaired or replaced. The borough is struggling to find funding for the preferred dock replacement option. And the idea of settling for a cheaper design isn’t going over well.
