Skagway resident sentenced to prison for tax charges is running for assembly again

A Skagway resident who was sentenced to a year in prison on federal tax charges has filed to run for borough assembly. Dan Henry resigned from the assembly last fall in order to report to federal prison. Now, he is back in Skagway and running for election again. In 2016, Henry pleaded guilty to willful failure to timely file federal income taxes. He was convicted on four misdemeanor charges and sentenced to a year and a day in prison. Updated: Survivor describes commuter plane’s emergency water landing outside Juneau

This story has been updated.  A plane on its way from Skagway to Juneau made an emergency water landing Monday morning. Everyone on board the aircraft swam safely to shore. Haines resident Luck Dunbar was one of them. “Well there you are, you’re sitting there thinking ‘This is it.  This is it. Here we go,’” Luck Dunbar recounted. Dunbar boarded the Alaska Seaplanes flight around 5:30 a.m. Monday. The plane flew from Haines to Skagway to pick up three more passengers. Then, it headed for Juneau. Overdue Haines hunter found safe Monday morning

An overdue hunter was found safe after a multi-agency search and rescue effort Monday morning. According to Alaska State Troopers, Haines resident Francis Hickman was found on a Sullivan Island beach by a volunteer search participant. On Sunday night, Hickman’s hunting partners reported him overdue and said he was not equipped to stay overnight in the field. Troopers, along with dog rescue teams, the Coast Guard, rescue squads from Juneau and Haines and good Samaritan volunteers, began a search at first light Monday morning. Union political action committee advocates for Haines Assemblyman’s recall

On Tuesday, three Haines Assembly members are up for recall. Less than two weeks before the election, the political action committee connected to the Haines Borough employee’s union took the unusual step of getting involved. Union leaders say Tom Morphet should lose his seat.
