Skagway and Haines candidate filing opens next week

Skagway residents who want to run for elected office can turn in their paperwork beginning Monday. The Skagway candidate filing period ends Aug. 14. Residents there will vote for a mayor, two assembly members and two school board members. The terms of Mayor Mark Schaefer, Assembly members Spencer Morgan and Monica Carlson and school board members Cara Cosgrove and Mary Tidlow expire this fall. Some Haines residents object to local taxes on pot and tobacco

Haines Assembly members are divided on so-called ‘sin taxes’ on tobacco and marijuana. They heard some opposition to the proposal at a meeting Tuesday. Gov. Walker to visit Haines for Southeast State Fair

Alaska Gov. Bill Walker will be Haines for the Southeast Alaska State Fair Saturday. Walker’s staff say the governor and his family will participate in the parade through downtown Haines at noon. Walker will give brief remarks at 1 p.m. at the main stage, right before a performance by the Juneau Jumpers. The governor last visited Haines in fall of 2016 to talk with residents about the Juneau Access Project. The fair continues through Sunday...

Northern Lynn Canal Fisheries Update: July 28, 2017

KHNS is featuring regular fisheries updates with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s Mark Sogge through the summer season. Sogge manages the commercial and subsistence fisheries in District 15. Sogge says after a near-record chum harvest, commercial fishermen in the Lynn Canal might see some ‘skinny’ weeks, due to low sockeye numbers. Sogge spoke with KHNS’s Emily Files about the outlook for the gillnet fleet, upcoming subsistence openings, and surprising genetic results for area sockeye.
