With two weeks left until Christmas, holiday events abound in the Upper Lynn Canal. KHNS’ Brandon Wilks attempts to shift through this busy weekend.

With at least ten separate events and activities taking place Saturday the 10th alone, residents of Haines and Skagway have no shortage of options on how to spend the day. Kicking off in Haines with the Alaska Arts Confluence Holiday Bazaar, from 10 am to 2 pm at the ANB/ANS Hall. Animal lovers can get their pet photos with Santa at HARK from 10 am to 1, while everyone else can get their snapshot with jolly ole saint nick from 1 to 3 at the Sheldon museum. Concurrently at the Haines library, there will be a Cookies by the Pound sale, continuing until the tables are bare. Followed by stories and songs with Mrs. Claus who looks suspiciously like Children’s librarian Holly Davis.

This Saturday at three at the library, I’m going to be dressing up as Mrs. Claus and reading stories, and singing songs. And we’ll have the jingle bells and the maracas for Feliz Navidad I’ll play the harp and the flute and we’ll just make it a fun family time for all ages for the young and the young at heart.

Following that, at 4 pm the annual Main Street Holiday Parade will take place featuring the snow dragon. With temperatures dropping and winds picking up, attendees are advised to dress warmly. Not to be outdone, over in Skagway there will be Ornament decorating, movies, and hot drinks, Saturday 9:30 am to 2:30 pm at the Klondike Gold Rush Visitor Center. The Santa Train will be running from 11 am and 1 pm from the Train Depot to top the day off there will be Christmas movies, Saturday and Sunday, at noon, 3 pm, and 6 pm at the Skagway Traditional Council.

Back in Haines, directly following the parade, the Uglys of Haines will hold their annual Gifts for Grub dinner, I spoke with Ugly’s member Chuck Mittman about this year’s dinner.

This year is our 21st annual gifts for grub. We’ll be serving our world-famous barbecued pulled pork sandwiches …we spent many hours and hours smoking this meat …with a bunch of sides …you can dine in or take out and the cost is a donation or a new unwrapped toy and the Haines Salvation Army will be distributing all the toys locally and anytime after that till the 14th you can drop a toy off at the Legion if you can’t make it tomorrow night. You can drop off at the Legion anytime from two to eight.

The weekend festivities will conclude with a Sunday fireworks display courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce, at 5 pm at the school track field and the Northern Lights Showcase, Sunday at 7 pm in the Chilkat Center Lobby. For KHNS in Haines, I’m Brandon Wilks.
