With the Southeast Alaska State Fair happening this weekend in Haines, and scores of people planning to camp for the weekend, we thought it best to check the weather. KHNS’ Mike Swasey checked in with Wes Adkins from The National Weather Service on Thursday for the forecast.

Swasey – Alright Wes, what is the weather looking like for the Southeast Alaska State Fair in Haines this weekend?

Adkins – You know, I think it’s gonna be a stellar weekend. The big story out there is warmth. We’re looking at the mid-70s, especially by Saturday, maybe some low 70s on Friday, and maybe cooling off a bit towards 70 or high 60s on Sunday. But I don’t think there’ll be any complaints out there.

Swasey – How about the evening temperatures? Are we going to cool down a little bit good for sleeping?  Do I need a sleeping bag when I go to camp on the beach? That’s what I’m wondering.

Adkins – You know, I, I think having a sleeping bag is always a good idea in Alaska. It could be a little, a little warm in the evenings for sure. But I think it’ll cool off pretty nicely as it usually does. Usually, when we get warm during the night, it’s gonna be windy and it doesn’t look very breezy this weekend. So maybe some light channel breezes from Lynn Canal during the afternoon, and maybe a light wind out of the Chilkat Valley in the evening. But other than that, nothing too bad.

There is the potential for some Thunder south of Haines this weekend, and we will monitor that. Some of those storms, particularly on Saturday, could reach up into the Upper Lynn Canal area. But right now we don’t think that’s going to be the case.

Swasey – Oh, so bring the rain fly.

Adkins – Well, potentially.

Swasey – I mean, I think I’m just gonna bring it to be safe. I’m going to bring the rain fly to make sure that I’m covered.

Adkins – Yeah, it’s always better to be safe.

Swasey – Yeah, absolutely And how do the seas look for people that are taking the ferry up from Juneau or ferrying over from Skagway how do the waters look in the Lynn Canal?

Adkins – Seas look great. Winds will be pretty light and it’ll be great sailing weather.

Swasey – Oh, so not a whole lot of wind. We’re not looking for major precipitation unless something changes and rolls in on Saturday. We’re looking at sunny skies during the day and nice clear, awesome summer weather at night.

Adkins – Yeah, for sure. Maybe a few more clouds on Sunday, but no big deal. I think after all that fun Friday and Saturday if we get a few more clouds, I think people welcome it.

Swasey – I think so too. All right. Thanks, Wes, I appreciate the outlook.

Adkins – Yeah, enjoy the fair up there in Haines! Swasey – You bet.
