Skagway’s police chief of 16 years says he’s resigned at the request of the municipality.

Ray Leggett told KHNS that he was asked to resign on Tuesday. The municipality has confirmed Leggett is no longer employed, but so far has refused to say more. Borough manager Brad Ryan will serve as the department head until the borough finds a replacement.

Leggett has been a fixture of Skagway’s 11-person department since he was hired in 2004. But his tenure has been rocky after the Alaska Police Standards Council revoked his police certificate in 2017. The council censured him after he reportedly interfered in a Haines police investigation of his son. He lost his police powers as a sworn officer but was able to remain as the department’s administrative head.

Leggett says he will retire from public service. He is also the pastor at Life Link Fellowship Church. Weekly services are on Saturday evenings via Zoom.

The municipality would not immediately disclose the former police chief’s annual salary. An open records request filed on Wednesday by KHNS is pending.

This is a developing story.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated Leggett lost his police powers as a sworn officer after censure by the Alaska Police Standards Council. Leggett would have lost powers if he were a police officer, but he was a police chief at the time. Administrative department heads are an exception.
