The name Garden City Market is a play on Skagway’s former town slogan, The Garden City of Alaska.  Traditionally it’s a monthly summertime market, which is less a farmer’s market, and more a gathering of local artists, jewelry makers, and craft persons.

This year, the Market has teamed up with The Skagway Brewing Company to set up shop on the brewery’s east deck.  Market organizer Annemarie Hasskamp says she’s excited about the new location.  It’s a mostly covered deck, so it’ll be like an indoor event, but with the airiness of the outdoors.

“I’m really excited. It’s just a great space and it’ll be nice to be able to offer some food and delicious beverages alongside the market,” said Hasskamp.

The brewery opens at four O’Clock, and with the market running from 3-5, customers will have the option of popping by for some post-shopping sustenance.  There are eight tables booked at this time, and with a maximum of ten tables available due to Covid protocols, that means there are still two tables left for local artists who have yet to book a spot.

“We’re gonna have some great jewelry, lots of fine art, bath and body products, herbs, spices, soap, some fabric art.  Lots of good stuff that’s all local art,” said Hasskamp.

The Garden City Market was established about a decade ago in Skagway, but with Covid canceling most everything in 2020, the events didn’t get to happen last summer. The Market is just one of the many creative ways the people of Skagway help foster the growth of arts in the community.

“You’re supporting great local artists, most of whom either don’t have a shop or aren’t in many stores in town.  We also donate any of our profits at the end of the year to local causes in need.  For example, this spring market. I am waiving all vendor table fees as a way to directly support our struggling local artists,” said Hasskamp.

The Spring Garden City Market in Skagway will run from 3-5 pm on the east deck of the Skagway Brewing Company Saturday, April 17th.  Masks are required.  There are access doors on the 4th avenue side and in the alley between 4th and 5th.  More markets are scheduled for June 19th, and August 7th with potential for another in September depending on weather and interest.
