Last spring, Skagway’s Department of Motor Vehicles underwent personnel changes that limited the services the local branch could offer. But, that’s part of the past now as Skagway has an almost fully functional DMV.

Skagway’s DMV has one employee, lifelong Skagway resident Jason O’Daniel. He’s been gathering certifications all year and the branch is rolling out services that have been unavailable for most of 2022.

“Currently, we can do titling and registration of vehicles commercial and non-commercial. We are also able to do license renewals at the moment. And like I said, once we get some things sorted out in terms of road exams, I’ll be able to do that as well,” said O’Daniel.

He says he expects to be able to start performing road tests for driver’s licenses by the second week of December. But that is only for Class B licenses. Commercial Driver’s Licenses will have to, at least in part, be done at another facility.

“People will be able to come in to start renewing their CDLs or if they’ve passed the road exam somewhere and just didn’t have time, you know, at that DMV to get that done, then they should be able to come in and I should be able to issue that for them as long as they’ve already passed the general knowledge and road exam,” said O’Daniel.

In January, O’Daniel says he’ll get certification for Advanced Vehicle Training which will allow him to inspect vehicles that may have a reconstructed title to determine if they are road worthy. Next spring he expects to get certified to offer motorcycle road tests.

This comes as great news to Skagway-based tour companies who had to travel to DMV offices in Haines and Juneau last year to prepare for the summer cruise ship season.

Skagway’s DMV is open from 8 am to 3:30 pm Monday through Friday and closed on all municipal holidays.
