The Alaska Department of Education and Early Development released its assessment numbers for multiple academic categories this week. Skagway School ranks highest in the state for testing scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics. School Superintendent Josh Coughran helps explain the numbers.

“As far as the ELA, the English Language Arts, which, you know, it’s everything from reading, to writing to comprehension, 81.97% of our students tested in the proficient or advanced level. And then, when it comes to math, it was 77.42% of our students were proficient or advanced,” said Coughran.

The next closest ranked school for English Language Arts was Petersburg with a 63% rating.  Haines came in 9th place at just over 52%. In Mathematics Wrangell ranked second at almost 52%.
