Orion Hanson and Dan Henry each won seats on Skagway’s borough assembly on Tuesday. Luke Rauscher became a new member of the school board, and Proposition One passed convincingly.

There were two seats open on Skagway’s assembly and incumbent Orion Hanson garnered the most votes with 312. Former Assemblymember Dan Henry earned 258 votes. Both will be eligible to serve three-year terms. Alexandria Weddel finished third with 193 votes, William Lockette II earned 66, Janilyn Heger had 56, and Katie Auer received 16 votes.

Auer had attempted to remove herself from the ballot several weeks prior to the election, but the deadline to remove her name had already passed. Heger sent correspondence to her email list last weekend asking her supporters to vote for Henry. That move potentially sealed the election for the former assemblymember who was convicted in 2016 for failing to pay income taxes and resigned his position on the borough assembly to enter a federal prison.

Also on Tuesday night, Proposition One passed with 278 votes for, and 200 votes against; paving the way for the municipality to begin improvements on its port. The $65 million revenue bond can be accessed as needed and will be paid for by revenue generated by the port.

Finally, Luke Rauscher received 360 votes for a three-year term on Skagway’s school board.

All new members of Skagway’s assembly and school board will assume their roles on October, 10. These preliminary results will be ratified by the Canvas Board on Thursday, October 6.
