Changes have been made to rules for parking in Skagway. At a regular meeting Thursday, the assembly adopted a resolution establishing new parking zones.

“The number one reason why we even started this was for public safety, ” said Skagway Mayor Monica Carlson. “Knowing the amount of cruise ship passengers. We’re going to have probably over a million by 2020, so in a couple years. And that’s going to be a huge impact on the core of our downtown.”

The new parking rules are an effort to reduce confusion, streamline traffic flow and better accommodate tourist-related traffic. Assemblyman Tim Cochran said part of that is about freeing up parking spaces in Skagway’s downtown.

“It’s an effort to try to alleviate people parking on the streets all day long,” said Cochran.

Recently, Skagway’s Civic Affairs Committee and Public Safety committee held discussions on the city’s parking issues.

The newly adopted resolution lays out zoning rules for no parking, loading, SMART busses, and the Dyea shuttle. It also includes 20-minute, two and one-hour parking zones. As well as public parking areas and restricted parking zones.

The resolution allows for parking permits to be provided to year-round residents of Broadway Street and Avenues First through Sixth.

Motels and hotels can also apply for permits, as well as year-round residents ages 65 and older.
