Skagway High School Basketball teams are playing in Hoonah this week.  And the Haines high school basketball teams played this weekend at home.

The Skagway Panthers boys and girls’ basketball teams are on the road in Hoonah. Both teams won Monday and will play again this evening.

Panthers girl’s coach Nate Jennings said the girls had a dogfight as always.  He said Hoonah is a tough place to win.  After being down early in the first quarter, the team overcame the deficit and didn’t lose the lead after that.

The girls won 41-33. Lead scorers included junior Kenadie Cox and sophomore Lennon Jennings.  The Lady Panthers play Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

The Panthers boys team earned a decisive victory over Hoonah, winning by more than 40 points. They play tonight at 7:30. See links on the Skagway School District website for how to live-stream the games.

The Glacier Bears girls basketball team dominated at home this weekend, routing Petersburg’s Lady Vikings on both Friday and Saturday.

The girls won 42 to 23 Friday night. Ariel Godinez  Long, Emma Dohrn and Gracie Stickler led the boards with eight points each. The bears outscored the Vikings in every quarter, dominating in the fourth quarter with 14 points.

The Glacier Bears boys team fell 42-66 to the Petersburg squad. Bears sophomore Alex Weerasinghe  led the boards with 11 points.

The boys, facing a significant deficit, rallied in the third quarter to within six points. Coach James Hart said the team was given a pretty good punch the first night.  He feels really good about the team regrouping and getting back on track.

Hart said the team will continue to work on boxing out and playing better defense.

On Saturday, the Bears girls team clawed their way to another victory, winning 23-16. Dohrn was Saturday’s high scorer with seven points.

Starting Junior Ashlyn Ganey suffered an ankle injury and sat the game out. Assistant coach Stuart DeWitt said bench players Ava Graham, Aly Lloyd and Sophia Long stepped up and played well defensively.

DeWitt said he’s confident the team will match up well to all their conference rivals this season. He expects the team to get a lot better on offense.

Ganey is expected to play in this weekend’s away games against Craig.

The Bears boys team fell to the Vikings again on Saturday, losing 48-63.

Phoenix Jacobson was the high scorer for the Bears team with 17 points. Colton Combs drained three, three-pointers for a total of nine points.
