Several traffic accidents were reported in Haines on Friday, but no injuries. A minor traffic accident was reported on Young Road just before 9 a.m. Friday, involving four vehicles. The vehicles reportedly slid out on the icy hill, before coming to a stop on the shoulder. There were no reported injuries, according to Haines Police Officer Michael Fullerton who responded to the incident.

“It was just kind of a typical bad weather accident, where Young Road was and can be very, very slick,” Officer Fullerton said. “And some drivers just came around that curve and realized that there were vehicles alongside the roadway, and were unable, in at least two cases to keep from impacting them.”

Officer Fullerton said the scene was cleared within half an hour, and all vehicles were able to drive away.

There was one similar accident last year in the same place on Young Rd, Officer Fullerton says, due to its steepness, and he advised driver’s to slow down.

“Very, very slippery conditions out there, I’d ask people to drive with caution, take plenty of time to get to wherever you’re going. Leave plenty of time to get there, so you’re not feeling rushed. And then also, once you’re in a situation where you feel like it’s unsafe, to pull to the side of the road, rather than proceeding,” he said.

On Friday afternoon, a vehicle rolled over Mud Bay Rd and 3rd Ave, also known as “Killer Hill.” There were no reported injuries, according to Officer Fullerton.

The Haines Police Department released a winter weather advisory Friday, forecasting four to seven inches of snow, then a change over to rain Friday afternoon near the Lynn Canal. Followed by a mix of snow and rain along the Haines Highway area Friday evening.
