Republican voters in Haines can pick their favorite presidential candidate Tuesday at the Chilkat Center.
Registered Republican voters can choose their favorite presidential candidate tomorrow in the Chilkat Center lobby. Alaska is one of about a dozen states taking part in “Super Tuesday.” Voting in the Alaska GOP Presidential Preference Poll happens from 3-8 p.m.
Alaska has 28 Republican delegates, and candidates who receive at least 13 percent of the PPP vote will be awarded Alaska delegate votes.
Some districts will share polling facilities, while others may have more than one site. According to the Alaska Republican Party website, if there is no place to vote in your town it’s because there were no volunteers to run a PPP there. That’s the case in Skagway.
However, on March 26 starting at 10 a.m., registered Democrats in Skagway will have a chance to select their preferred candidate at the Skagway School. Haines has no polling place for the Democratic caucus.
Republic presidential candidates are down to Ben Carson, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, Marco Rubio and Donald Trump. Democratic presidential candidates are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
With the disproportionate amount of retirees in the the town of Haines, you would hope someone could organize a Democratic Caucus here so all residents could easily participate in this important process. They managed to organize caucuses in towns the fraction of our size including McCarthy (30 residents), Iguiugig (50 residents), Hope (190 residents), and Copper Center (330 residents). Most other towns in Southeast AK have caucuses including: Hydaburg, Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Sitka, Skagway, Wrangell, Gustavus, and Yakutat. We are working hard to keep businesses open, transportation options reliable, have nice places for everyone to dine, and promote a viable economy to keep the town of Haines thriving. To all the non-working retirees with free time: please do your part to support this community.
Please call 907-258-3050 and tell them this. No vote should be left out no matter what party you favor.
