Skagway musher Ryan Redington took a first place victory at the 100-mile Gunflint Mail Run in Grand Marais, Minnesota this weekend. His wife Erin Redington and her team came in 4th, about ten minutes behind. It was their first race of the 2020 season.

“The dogs did really good. It feels good,” he said.

“It was a fun race, a lot of good dog teams and I’m pretty proud of my team.”

Temperatures on the trail dipped down to nearly 30 below, but both Redingtons raced faster this year than last year on the same trail.

The family and their dogs–Callin’ Trail kennel–are in Wisconsin preparing for a 290 mile race at the end of the month. That’s the John Beargrease Marathon in Duluth, Minnesota.

Their season’s goals?

“Just to have fun as much as we can and try to do well in the races. And then we’ll race the Iditarod coming up in March,” said Redington.

That’s only three races away. Redington says all the dogs are happy and healthy.
