The Haines borough has placed a call to the community for capital improvement proposals. This is the second year it is doing so. Borough Clerk Alekka Fullerton explains.

“We realized that the community has a lot of ideas about projects that need to be developed that staff may not have recognized, either yet or at all.”

To submit a proposal, residents are asked to fill a  form on the borough website. It asks to describe the project, and its effect on the community’s finances, health, or accessibility.

Once the proposal has been submitted,

”And then we can start looking at it, the feasibility of the project, what needs to happen,  if there is something else that needs to happen first, or analyzing the program to see if we can at all do it”

The program allowed the borough to learn about the need for improvement to the small boat harbor in excursion inlet. The borough then found out it doesn’t own that facility, but passed the request on to the state. Improvements to the baseball field were funded through the program.

All proposals will be considered.

“Somebody proposed a pickleball field last year, and I think that would be really fun!

The deadline for proposals is December 31st.
