Haines and Skagway sent their tourism directors to Southeast Conference at the end of September. The conference is held annually and focuses on economic development in Southeast Alaska.The two tourism directors returned home with news, numbers and networking opportunities. The Metlakatla Indian Community is home to Alaska’s only Native reservation, and they’d love for you to come visit. Less than 20 miles south of Ketchikan, the village of about 1,500 people is a short ferry ride or an even shorter seaplane flight from Ketchikan, yet many locals have never made the trip.

So on the last day [9/26] of a regional conference focused on economic development in Ketchikan [web: Southeast Conference], Metlakatla’s mayor brought a group of attendees across the channel to show off what his community has to offer. KRBD’s Michael Fanelli went along for the tour and has this story.

Wrangell’s been busy over the past few months preparing to send a 74-foot Sitka spruce to Washington D.C., as this year’s Capitol Christmas Tree. As KSTK’s Colette Czarnecki reports, Alaskans across the state are also making homemade ornaments for the tree.

Vaccination rates in Alaska are among the lowest in the country. And they’ve dipped even lower in the last few years. That’s raised concerns for public health experts.
