The Haines Planning Commission’s newly elected members held their first meeting last week. They heard a presentation by the state’s Department of Transportation about the next phase of work on the Haines Highway.

The Haines Police Department, then the Fire Department, were called to a downtown storage building on Thursday to investigate signs of suspicious activity and smoke in the middle of the day. And the Bald Eagle Festival in Haines is set to start on Friday. This year the tourism office is stepping in to organize the event. We spoke with tourism director Reba Hylton about the details.

A totem pole carved over half a century ago by Chilkoot artists is coming home. It has started on a cross country trip and will arrive in the Chilkat valley in the near future. The totem was property of a national airline company, and has sat in Georgia for decades.
