 Whatever the season, Southeast Alaska is green. From the mixed conifer forest, to the roadside shrubbery, there is a lot of green – but not all of it is benign.

An invasive species has found a home along Southeast’s highways, pushing out native blueberry and salmonberry bushes. Ironically, it’s quite beautiful, which makes a recent gathering of experts in Sitka all the more determined to eradicate it.

At its last meeting, the Skagway assembly unanimously approved the contract of a new Director for the Dahl Memorial Clinic. The vote ends a contentious chapter in the history of the clinic, and brings the hope of a fresh start. And, the new Haines comprehensive plan is moving towards the drafting phase. The team working on the plan recently gave an update to the borough assembly and, the survey results reveal the diverse character of the community

The Haines borough assembly attended a workshop about the Porcupine road project. The project recently lost its funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and the borough may be on the hook for the work that has already been done.

Newscast – November 16 2023

The Haines borough assembly voted to rehear a conditional use permit application for a gravel pit and rock quarry across the road from the ferry terminal. The permit had been issued by the outgoing planning commission at its last meeting. And, Skagway ghosts are receiving a lot of attention. Following reports of mysterious pushes and shoves, a local student plans on investigating an old building for spooky phenomena. But, he already has a large disembodied crowd following him.

Newscast – November 15 2023

A long-simmering anger in Haines over property tax assessments has reached the boiling point. Taxpayers circulated a petition asking that the borough cancel the assessor’s contract. The petition gathered close to 600 signatures, and the borough assembly took note.
