The Haines borough is putting out a call for volunteers to serve on its various boards and commissions. Every year there is turnover, as most seats are for a three year term.

In all, 27 seats are opening, in 13 boards and committees. These include the Planning Commission, the Ports and Harbor Committee, and the Chilkat Center Advisory Board, as well as four Road Maintenance Service Areas, that oversee the plowing of individual roads outside the townsite.

Not every seat will require a big commitment, as Haines Borough Clerk  Alekka Fullerton explains:

“Some committees meet more regularly, like the Ports And Harbor Committee meets almost every 4th Thursday at 10.30, I mean they have been very very stable in terms of when thy meet, and then there is other committees like the Parks And Rec Committee that hasn’t met in two years I don’t think.”

If interested, the first step is to fill a board appointment application form, or send an email to the clerk’s office.

To function, a board must have a quorum, meaning at least half of their seats must be filled.

Serving on a seat is a valuable  way to contribute to the community.

“It’s a great way to be involved and to know what is coming down the pipe. So what projects the borough is looking at, or what project could be created, if you have ideas, or a pet project, or a vision, or something you would like to see happen in the Haines borough, it’s a great opportunity to make that happen.”

The only requirement is to have resided in the borough for thirty days.
