Haines School Superintendent Roy Getchell discusses proposed state budget cuts to education and the Skagway Prickles prepare for the First Lego League National Competition in May.
It was really fun to spend the 17 million on the Haines School Renovation, even though the result was an ugly ugly building. We spent the money like it was monopoly money, because the State was going to pay 90% of the money. If the State backs out of that plan, which even I will admit is a big surprise, guess what, the Haines Taxpayers will take it where it hurts. Lets start by reducing all administrative salaries by the exact amount of the budget reduction from the state. That way at least the pain is fairly distributed among all parties. Kinda makes you wonder about the $66.000 bonus paid to the previous superintendent doesn’t it?
How about we consolidate the Haines, Skagway and Chatham school districts and immediately save $250,000 in salary and benefits by having only one superintendent instead of three. It would still be one of the lightest loaded superintendent jobs in the country.

I like the Haines school building inside and out. It does look overly expensive for a small town that resists all economic development.

I agree with consolidation.
