Minto Metals announced on Saturday it would cease operations at its mine site North of Whitehorse. About 180 people work at the mine, according to a Canadian Broadcasting Company article. Minto’s website says the mine has operated since 2007, and extracted copper, gold and silver.

Minto Metals had been the only user of Skagway’s ore dock before the dock was shut down for upgrades earlier this year.

Skagway Borough Manager Brad Ryan said the loss of Minto as a customer would not impact the future operations of the dock significantly.

The mine is located around 150 miles north of Whitehorse, on Selkirk First Nation traditional land.

The Canada news story says  the Yukon government has stepped in and is now in charge of the site. It says the government is now responsible for the security of the site and for continuing to treat its water.

In another press release on Tuesday, Minto announced the resignation of its entire board of directors and senior management.
