Back in 2012, Skagway resident and business owner Jeff Brady established a Scholarship Fund as a way to pay tribute to his late mother’s love of the arts. The fund is available to folks all over southeast Alaska from Juneau to the Upper Lynn Canal.

Over the years they have awarded over $50,000 to over 60 students.

“My mother, Margaret Frans Brady was a real proponent of the arts and education. And I was thinking, you know after she passed away, how can I put some of that money she left to good use in the community,” said Brady.

Depending on the year anywhere from $7,000 to $10,000 is made available through the Margaret Frans Brady Fund Scholarships.  And though it sounds like a great resource for kids looking to further their studies in the arts, which it is, it’s not limited to kids looking to go to college.

“It’s open to anyone at any age, really, I mean, it could even apply to a senior citizen who’s trying to, you know, further their artistic talents. So we’ve funded people who wanted to go to different symposiums and things like that, who were like my age,” said the former newspaperman.

The MFB Scholarship Fund will consider anyone looking to further their artistic education in the pursuit of creative arts like writing, music, visual, and performance arts.  They can help kids going to college, or help artists attend art camps, symposiums, or conferences.

The application can be found at juneaucf.org and the deadline is April 25th.  The scholarship committee plans on announcing this year’s recipients by early May.
