The Haines Glacier Bears girls went 1-1 at home in their first Division 2A conference games against the Metlakatla Chiefs this past weekend.

The girls lost 30-51 on Friday night. Although the Lady Bears kept the score close at the half, the Miss Chiefs dominated on offense for the remainder of the game. Head Coach Coleman Stanford said his team switched to a zone defense on Saturday night. The defensive adjustment helped Haines reverse Friday night’s score, and the Lady Bears defeated Metlakatla 52-32.

Stanford commended senior Ashlyn Ganey and freshman CC Elliott for their defensive efforts. Stanford said they also focused on attacking on the transition, drawing fouls and getting a higher free throw percentage.

The Glacier Bears boys fell during both contests against Metlakatla, losing 41-55 on Friday and 32-67 on Saturday.

Head Coach James Hart said the boys were overwhelmed by Metlakatla’s full and half-court pressure.

Both teams are preparing to face off against the Wrangell Wolves in Wrangell this weekend. Hart said his team will focus on concise passes and ensuring they play as a team.

Hart praised junior Cruise Nettleton for his strong play. Hart said Nettleton “played aggressive on offense and defense and really came into his own as far as being a big man. He’s been growing a lot in the past few years.”

The Skagway Panthers were set to compete against Angoon but a ferry cancellation prevented their home games. Activities Director Kaylie Smith said a series of ferry cancellations have prevented their basketball teams from competing in most of their games so far this winter. Competing in Division 1A, both the boys and girls defeated Hoonah in early January. Smith said their conference records thus far are both 2-0.

“Our varsity teams look great. Both have a really good shot at state this year. We’re really excited about the season if we ever get to play some basketball games,” Smith said.

They’re scheduled to compete in home games against Angoon this week.
