KHNS Staff and Volunteers have Monday May 27th off in recognition of the military personnel who have given their lives in service to our country. We will have a mix of regular and special programming throughout the day, and volunteer Bill Annis coming in on the day off to host Backcountry live from 1-3pm.

8-10am – The Mainstream: a radio program exploring the best recorded music of yesterday and today for an AAA audience. Safe enough to play at work, but daring enough to never get bored, producer and host Brett Maybee (Seneca) draws upon his love of all music to create the very best listening experience

10-11am – Freakonomics: Freakonomics Radio ferrets out connections between seemingly unrelated things. The program explores the riddles of everyday life and the weird wrinkles of human nature— from cheating and crime to parenting and sports— using the tools of economics to explore real-world behavior. Host Stephen J. Dubner discovers the hidden side of everything in interviews with Nobel laureates and provocateurs, social scientists and entrepreneurs.

11am-12pm – Third hour of The Mainstream

Noon-1pm – The World: “The World”’s unique editorial perspective brings energy and passion to each day’s broadcast. The goal: to take us beyond borders and boundaries, and fire up our curiosity about a fascinating, messy, contentious, and beautiful planet. It’s about exploration and risk, war and peace, fun and folly, and how our daily drama plays out around the globe.

1-3pm – Host Bill Annis is coming in on the day off to bring you live Backcountry, with regular updates from the community calendar and local weather

3-5pm – The World Cafe: World Cafe host Raina Douris and contributing host Kallao present a carefully curated music mix along with the central element of each daily show: an intimate conversation with an artist focusing on their craft, songwriting, and inspirations, combined with an exclusive musical performance.

5-6pm – NPR’s All Things Considered: NPR’s afternoon radio newsmagazine presenting breaking news mixed with compelling analysis, insightful commentaries, interviews, and special – sometimes quirky – features

6-6:30 – Living on Earth: Hosted by Steve Curwood, the award-winning environmental news program “Living on Earth” delves into the leading issues affecting the world we inhabit.

6:30 – 7pm – Counterspin: Drawing on an international network of experts, analysts, activists and artists, CounterSpin dissects news coverage of a wide range of issues and current events.

7-8pm – Alan Seeger: Instrument of Destiny: From the trenches of The Great War, Alan Seeger’s poems, letters and diaries spring to life in the voices of Cathedral Choir of St. John the Divine. Recorded just before lockdown in the Cathedral, Patrick Zimmerli’s new oratorio “Alan Seeger: Instrument of Destiny” fuses Seeger’s formal writing with monkish chants and 20th Century music. Scott Simon hosts this moving hour of tribute to all those who saw combat, and those who awaited them at home.

8-10pm – Full Moon Hacksaw: Full Moon Hacksaw is a weekly two-hour radio series spotlighting an eclectic mix of classic and modern Jazz and Blues music, hosted by Arizona radio veteran Tom “Hacksaw” Coulson.
