A hit and run over the weekend resulted in thousands of dollars of damage on Main Street.

The incident occurred at approximately 5 in the morning on Saturday.

According to Haines Police Officer Chris Brown, the driver of a blue Ford Bronco struck the back of a Ford pickup and continued driving down Main Street. The driver then drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk in front of The Hair Shop on Main Street and struck a marble sculpture of a bear. The bear, valued at approximately $16,000, was damaged beyond repair.

According to Officer Brown’s report, he found the driver walking West on Main Street after abandoning his vehicle. The man admitted to driving the blue Ford Bronco and was arrested for Driving Under the Influence, refusal to submit to a chemical test and failure to give notice of an accident.

On Wednesday, the defendant failed to appear at an arraignment. The court issued a summons for a hearing next Monday.
