Welcome to high school basketball action on KHNS! You can find audio for recent games in the Programming section under the Basketball tab.

Basketball broadcasts on KHNS begin starting Friday, December 18th when the Haines Glacier Bears Boys and Girls travel to Petersburg to take on the Petersburg Vikings as part of the Little Norway Tournament.  Check back for more information.

KHNS has been the connection between our towns’ traveling student basketball teams and their fans at home for almost three decades, and we are excited to be part of Southeast Alaska’s rich history of intercommunity sports. We’re proud of our students and all of their hard work!

Basketball season typically lasts from early January through mid-March and requires between two and four staff member to coordinate, per broadcast, in addition to volunteer announcers. We thank our basketball underwriters for providing the financial support that helps make that possible. To support basketball broadcasts on KHNS, email development@khns.org.

KHNS Basketball Broadcast Policies:

KHNS airs all regular season conference away games (i.e., not on home court) for the Haines Glacier Bears and the Skagway Panthers varsity teams. We do not broadcast pre-season games or games with non-conference teams (e.g., Yukon tournaments, etc). We follow the season through Regionals, and on to State when applicable.

KHNS strives always to maintain a balance between the regular programming schedule that members depend on and special broadcasts that serve the specific needs of our varied listening communities. In determining broadcast schedules, KHNS places a priority on News programming, a decision informed by our Community Advisory Board and other listener and member feedback. For more information about the Community Advisory Board, email the station’s Program Director, at pd@khns.org.

We do not interrupt the morning (6-8am) or evening (5-7pm) news hours for anything other than Regional or State Tournament play. If a game starts during the news hour, we record and edit to air by tape delay.

KHNS also places a high priority on the timeliness of basketball broadcasts, meaning that the station is dedicated to airing games as close as possible to their actual start time. If tape delayed, the games will start as soon as possible immediately following the news hour, interrupting regular programming. During the tape delaying process, staff uploads game audio to our website as soon as possible.

If two or more games are scheduled to start at the same time, the game that starts first is broadcast first, followed as quickly as possible by the next game via tape delay.

If games start at the same time, we decide who is broadcast first based on the number of live broadcasts the team has already had, so that the team with less coverage goes first.
