The Haines man accused of shooting at another resident in early December was charged with two felonies and two misdemeanors by Haines Borough Police Department.
Those charges include assault in the second and third degrees and misconduct involving a controlled substance. According to a criminal complaint, arresting officer Max Juci reported that on Dec. 9, a St. James Trailer Place resident shot another man in the foot after the man drove to his trailer to pick up a woman who was staying with the resident. That woman told police she had been smoking methamphetamines with the shooter the prior evening and that morning.
The woman told police that she called the man and asked to be picked up because she and the suspect “had been fighting and he was becoming increasingly erratic.”
The resident confronted the man when he arrived to pick up the woman, and the resident threatened to shoot the man. The conflict escalated when the resident pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot the man through the foot, according to charging documents.
The man escaped in his truck and police later found him outside of a store on Main Street and arranged for him to visit the Haines Health Clinic.
“I observed a hole to go through the top of (the victim’s) left boot, a hole through the interior boot liner and two holes in his left sock which appear to be entry and exit wounds,” arresting officer Max Juicy wrote.
The suspect surrendered to police who remained at the site of the shooting. He was later held at the Haines Rural Jail Facility.
The case has been moved to the superior court in Juneau and since then, an additional felony assault charge and a misdemeanor misconduct with a weapon have been filed. The suspect has since posted a $10,000 bail and is awaiting further prosecution.
