A Haines man has been charged with two felonies after he received a package in the mail containing crystal meth and heroin.

According to court documents, the United States Postal Inspection Service obtained a search warrant to examine a parcel sent to 43-year-old Scott Brewington after several suspicious packages were mailed to him earlier this month. On July 21, Inspector Scott Horne discovered that a parcel addressed to Brewington contained 28.5 grams of crystal meth and 10.8 grams of heroin. The drugs were hidden in a soda can with a hollowed out recess.

Officers with the Southeast Alaska Cities Against Drugs (SEACAD) task force removed most of the substances before making the package available for pick up from the post office in Haines. Court documents say Brewington retrieved the parcel and took it to his residence.

Officers searched Brewington’s residence and found the parcel along with scales, dime bags, records of sales and notes regarding quantities of controlled substances and prices.

Court documents say that Brewington acknowledged receiving the controlled substances and sending money south to pay for them. The packages sent to Brewington were addressed from Phoenix, Arizona.

In an email to KHNS, Sergeant Dominic Branson of the SEACAD task force stated that the operation was a joint effort between Haines Borough Police, Sitka Police Department, Juneau Police Department, State Troopers and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Brewington was released from custody on a $15,000 unsecured bond on the condition that he remain in Haines and maintain contact with the local police department. His next court appearance is August 10.
