The Haines Glacier Bears Cross Country team took first and second place at the state competition this week end.

Thirteen athletes, two coaches, and five supporting families took the drive from Haines to Anchorage this weekend to attend the state cross country competition.

Two weeks ago, both boy’s and girl’s teams had finished first at the regionals, qualifying them  to compete in the event taking place at Anchorage’s Bartlett high school.

Both teams did very well, said coach Jordan Baumgartner, as the girl’s team finished first, and the boy’s took second place.

Team ranking is determined by averaging individual member’s results, here are the top finishing Haines runners:

In the girl’s race,

Ari’el Godinez-Long finished second

Grace Long-Godinez took seventh place

Avery Getchell was 10th

And Sal Chapell finished 11th

For the the boys,

Luke Davis took third place

And Andrew Hansen was fifth.

The team celebrated on Saturday night with ice cream, and some fancy bread from the Great Harvest Bread Company.

They will parade down main street atop the fire truck at 10.30 on Tuesday morning.
