The Haines High School Basketball teams faced Metlakatla at home over the weekend.  Skagway basketball teams head to Petersburg this weekend and Haines heads to Wrangell.

The Haines girls basketball team lost 30-56 to Metlakatla at home on Friday.  Coach Coleman Stanford said the team rallied by upping the intensity for Saturday’s game, which resulted in an exciting show.  The Haines girls were down the first quarter, and went into half-time tied at 23-23. The girls kept it close during the second half, but ended down 46-51 at the buzzer.  The team heads to Wrangell to play Friday and Saturday, where Stanford said the girls are focused on maintaining high intensity.

The Haines boys lost to Metlakatla 53-56 in overtime on Friday and 35-51 on Saturday.  The young team started four sophomores and one junior, with Junior Phoenix Swaner on the bench with a rolled ankle.  Phoenix is expected to play in Wrangell this weekend. Coach James Hart told KHNS that the team will focus on playing aggressive from start to finish.

The Skagway basketball teams will play in the Petersburg Basketball Tournament this weekend.

The boys Skagway team traveled to Gustavus last week.  The Panthers beat the Foxes 83-39 in Thursday’s game and won again on Friday with a final score of 66-16.

The Lady Panthers head into the weekend with momentum after winning the Elizabeth Peratrovich Tournament in Juneau last week.  Coach Nate Jennings says he’s looking forward to playing five teams that his squad has yet to face this season.  He told KHNS that all eight players on his travel team are healthy, and that he has the deepest bench he’s had in seven years as coach.
