Former state legislator Sam Kito III declined the Municipality of Skagway’s borough manager job offer last week.

The municipality offered the position to Kito on February 8. Over the following week, borough staff answered his questions about municipal health insurance, benefits, and more. On Friday, Kito notified the Municipality that he had accepted a job as a project manager with the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau.

According to Kito, he received offers from the university and the municipality of Skagway on the same day. He accepted the position with the university due to concerns about relocating from Juneau to Skagway.

Kito represented the Upper Lynn Canal in the Alaska House of Representatives from 2014 to January of 2019.  He has also worked with the state’s department of education and the City and Borough of Juneau.

He was among three candidates for borough manager. John Ardaugh and David Milliron also made it to the final round of interviews for the position. Ardaugh is a lawyer from Chicago and Milliron is the city manager of Hogansville Georgia.

Skagway has been without a borough manager since July. The Skagway Borough Assembly will meet Thursday to discuss its options for filling the position.
