The Dick Hotch Memorial Basketball Tournament kicks off today in Haines.

This year, six men’s teams are expected to play, from Haines, Klukwan, Juneau, and Whitehorse.

Two women’s teams from Haines and Juneau will face off in three games, the first is Friday at 6 p.m. in the Haines Elementary School Gym.

The men’s games start tonight at 6 p.m. in the high school gym. The Haines Merchants will play the Juneau team Good Ol’ Boys first. At 7 p.m., Chilkat Thunder faces Whitehorse players Big Bigness. Then at 8 p.m., Whitehorse Generals compete against Good Ol’ Boys.

The tournaments continues Friday, with games starting at noon, between the Chilkat Thunder and Chilkat Warriors. At 1 p.m., the Warriors play Big Bigness. Haines Merchants and Whitehorse Generals face off at 2 p.m.

The games will continue through the weekend. The first place team wins a $2,500 prize. And organizer Stuart DeWitt says the player named MVP will take home an ounce of gold nuggets.
