The Haines Chilkat Center stage is coming to life this week. KHNS’s Alain d’Epremesnil chatted with Todd Sebens, who directs the play that goes wrong.
Cast and crew of the latest Lynn Canal Community Players production are putting the finishing touches on “The Play That Goes Wrong”, a high energy comedy.
Dudzik: “Robert finally amnages to get to the upper level, and takes the gun from Chris For once 400 is on when it’s supposed to be.”
This is Laurie Dudzik going through the light cues.
Todd Sebens is the director of the play. Sebens says he started considering the play over a year ago. He says it is the funniest script he has come across in all his years as a director.
Sebens: “We’ve had a few people in the audience over the rehearsals, especially the last few days, and they are just cracking up through the whole thing. It keeps you laughing, it really does.”
Sebens says the set is complicated, and had to be built sturdy.
Sebens: “Because it’s a very physical play, it’s got a second floor there, that four big guys have to stand on, it has to support them, a couple guys have to come off the edge, one has to climb up there, there is somebody going through the window, just a very physical play. A sword fight, people get thrown around, there are already a few bruises.”
Sebens describes the plot as a murder-mystery, with a play within a play.
Sebens: “The Murder at Haversham Manor, put on by the Cornley Drama Society. And they are trying to put on a very very good show, but things just keep going wrong. Not intentionally in the play, it just happens. It’s written into the play, but, and they just can’t get away from things going wrong. Hence the name the play that goes wrong.”
If all goes according to plan, there will be performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, and a Sunday matinee.
