Alaska State Parks is opening the Chilkat State Park cabin for public use in the off season. The cabin has been used for housing the campground host, but from now on it will be available for nightly rental from October 15th to the 1st of May. The cabin will soon be listed on the State Parks cabin reservation  website. For a fee of  $60, the one room cabin can house up to eight people. It has a woodstove, a table and some rough beds, and an outhouse.

As the park gate is closed during the off season, renters will have to walk from the gate at the top of the hill, all the way down to the cabin. State Parks South East Regional Superintendent Preston Kroes  says the cabin will be serviced irregularly, and it will be up to users to bring their own firewood, water, sleeping pads and anything to make the night more comfortable. Food can be prepared on the woodstove, but pots and pans will have to be brought in.

As for cleaning, here is Kroes:

“Be kind to the people after you and leave it the way you found it, or better.”

The reservation website is expected to be updated sometime next week to include the cabin, it  is being called the Glacier View Cabin.
