2021 Haines Assembly Candidate debate features four candidates running for two seats on the borough assembly: Richard Clement, Tyler Huling, Debra Schnabel and Brenda Josephson. Hosted by Corinne Smith, reporter with KHNS, and Kyle Clayton, editor and publisher of the Chilkat Valley News.

The debate features seven resolutions that reflect ideas and discussions commonly heard around Haines, in bars and coffee shops. Candidates each have one minute to respond, followed by five minutes of debate to address each others’ ideas. The candidates were provided the resolutions in advance of the debate.

  • The Haines Borough should pursue a partnership with AIDEA to improve Lutak Dock and build an ore terminal.
  • Institutions like the public library, pool, Mosquito Lake Community Center and Chilkat Center are not essential services and should be the first targets for budget cuts.
  • As an assembly member, my decisions should always be based on majority public opinion.
  • The assembly should play a stronger role in COVID response.
  • Haines is dying.

1:10 – Listener Questions – 2 minutes each

  • What part do you think the tribe plays in local government?
