Initial results of yesterday’s election statewide races have indicated Mike Dunleavy is likely to be the next governor of the State of Alaska. He leads Mark Begich with 52 percent of the vote statewide.
Congressman Don Young appears to have retained his seat yet again. He currently has 53 percent of the vote, to Alyse Galvin’s 45 percent of the statewide vote.
Ballot Measure number 1, the Stand for Salmon Initiative, has failed with 62 percent of voters opposing the Ballot Measure to 35 percent of statewide voters in favor.
98% of precincts across the state have reported in.
Unofficial results show that Sarah Hannan and Jesse Kiehl have been elected to represent the Upper Lynn Canal in the Alaska State Legislature.
Hannan was the Democratic nominee for the state house of representatives. She ran on a platform prioritizing a balanced state budget, affordable and accessible health care, renewable energy and public education. She was the only Juneau area legislative candidate in support of Ballot Measure 1, which would have increased protections for salmon and other anadromous fish habitats.
Hannan was challenged by Chris Dimond, an Independent with a background in union organizing.
Hannan is a retired public high school teacher and owns a small business with her husband selling locally-caught fish. She is also a former legislative aide.
Jesse Kiehl came out on top in the race for Senate District Q, a constituency that encompasses the Upper Lynn Canal.
Kiehl ran as a Democrat in the race for state senate. He opposes the now-stalled Upper Lynn Canal highway extension and supports a state income tax. During his campaign he said he’d look to tapping oil companies to help balance the budget.
Kiehl was challenged by Don Ethridge, an independent. He worked for years as lobbyist for the state’s largest union and more recently he was an active member of Juneau’s Docks and Harbors Board.
Kiehl has served on the Juneau Assembly since 2011. Until this spring he was an aide to Sen. Dennis Egan, a Democrat, who retired this year for health reasons.
KHNS will provide more election results as they become available.
