Rockslide draws attention to potential hazard looming over Skagway cruise dock

A rockslide near Skagway’s largest cruise ship dock Saturday didn’t injure anyone. But it drew attention to the potential danger of an active slide area neighboring a bustling port. https://khns.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/29SlideFolowINTRO.mp3 The dock adjacent to the slide area, called the railroad dock, is owned and operated by the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad, a major tourist attraction. Close to 2,000 participants expected for 35th Klondike Road Relay

An overnight road race between Northern Southeast Alaska and the Yukon Territory will see a strong turnout for its 35th anniversary. The Klondike International Road Relay follows a former gold rush route from Skagway to Whitehorse. Most runners participate in teams of 10. The more than 100-mile relay is divided into legs that range between about six and 16 miles each. The race takes place mostly overnight. Brown bear found shot and killed on the Haines Highway

A brown bear was shot and killed near the Haines Highway last week. Haines Wildlife Trooper Trent Chwialkowski says early on August 22, callers reported a dead bear in the middle of the highway near mile 17. Chwialkowski located the bear. He says it was either shot near a creek and ran toward the road, or the incident happened near the highway where the animal was found. The bear was approximately three-and-a-half years old.
