A fire broke out last night at the Oceanside RV Park in Haines.

Around 12:30 a.m. a trailer located just opposite Canal Marine Company caught fire. The resident of the trailer managed to exit unharmed. The resident’s pet dog and bird were unable to escape the fire.

Dispatch notified the Haines Volunteer Fire Department just before 1 a.m. Roughly 15 firefighters and 3 ambulance personnel responded. Although the flames were extinguished in roughly an hour, the crew did not leave the scene until 3 a.m.

Volunteer firefighter Chuck Mitman said responders could not determine what ignited the fire. However, according to Mitman, there was a lot of fuel in a small area.

The trailer contained a heater, stove and refrigerator. Wooden pallets surrounded the skirt to insulate the structure, and two large propane tanks lay on the ground just outside.

Despite the intensity of the burn, most of the damage from the fire was limited to the trailer and its contents. The wind blew the fire in the opposite direction of Canal Marine Company and other structures. Mitman said emergency services were able to arrive upwind of the fire and that the open space of the RV park allowed easier access to the burn.
