Design work to refurbish or replace the aging Lutak Dock could move forward in the near future.

On Tuesday, the Haines Borough Assembly will decide whether to approve a $130,000 design contract.

Lutak Dock is the gateway for freight and fuel coming in and out of Haines. The dock is ‘living on borrowed time,’ according to an engineering inspection about two years ago.

The borough is leaving its options open, asking for design proposals that address both refurbishment and replacement of the dock.

Six companies submitted proposals. Borough staff recommend a contract with Anchorage-based R&M Engineering for about $130,000.

R&M’s proposal includes three public meetings to gather input and explain design options.

If approved, the R&M proposal says work could start this month and the initial meeting could be held in early November.

The item is listed on the assembly’s consent agenda, which means it will be approved without discussion unless an assembly member asks to remove it from the consent agenda.

The assembly is also scheduled to discuss the Juneau Access Road. Assembly member Margaret Friedenauer requested the discussion item partly because of Gov. Bill Walker’s planned Haines visit later this week.

The assembly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in assembly chambers.
