KHNS "Frequently Asked Questions" About HD Radio
1) What is HD RadioTM--Is it high definition like television?
HD Radio technology is a digital transmission technology developed by iBiquity Digital Corporation. HD often referred to as Hybrid Digital (not high definition) allows multiple programs on one channel and works on the same frequencies allocated to analog (FM and AM) radio stations.
2) How do I receive HD radio?
HD radio requires an HD radio receiver to receive and process the HD digital broadcast signal. Many HD radio receivers will also pick up the analog signal as well.
3) How do I use the new HD radio receiver?
You simply tune in to the HD broadcast of your choice, in this case it is KHNS-FM 102.3. This allows you to receive the same programming with which you are familiar--NPR, KHNS news, Backcountry, Flashbacks & Fresh Tracks, Sound Waves, Performance Today, and much more.
4) What is "improved" about HD radio?
Because the signal is digital, it can carry more on the broadcast band, offering CD-like quality, including full bandwidth bass and excellent treble, better dynamic range, and is immune to multipath interference. HD radio can also carry data information to be displayed on the radio receiver and multicast programming (such as 102.3-1 and 102.3-2). When KHNS completes its upgrade, these services will be offered as well.
5) What is the cost of receiving HD Radio broadcasts?
Other than the cost of the new HD Radio receiver, there are no additional costs for HD Radio broadcasts from KHNS. You can rely on the same public radio you have always received. There are no subscription charges like satellite radio.
6) How do I get an HD radio receiver?
KHNS has compiled a comparison chart (see below) of available HD receivers, available on the Internet and radio retailers. Many brands are HD receivers and clock radios with auxiliary inputs and outputs for additional audio capabilities, such as MP3 and iPod players.
7) Is HD Radio technology the only way to listen to KHNS?
No, HD Radio broadcasting is an added feature of your favorite radio station, KHNS-FM. This new technology allows KHNS to broadcast in the older technology (analog) and in digital.
8) Can I listen to HD radio in my car?
Yes, but you need to replace your current car radio with an aftermarket HD Radio or HD Radio adapter. NPR Labs recommend that buyers use the services of a professional auto radio installer because many original equipment auto radios are often integrated with other important vehicle systems, such as climate control, navigation assistance, vehicle security systems, etc.
